All About Slat Mills

One of the tools you might see in our mobile gym is a slat mill, also known as a canine treadmill. A dog running treadmill is called a “slat mill,” and it is not powered by a motor of any kind. It is made up of “slats” which are attached to a free-spinning belt, making a cushioned but solid surface for your dog to walk or run. Slat mills are excellent for providing dogs with a safe and controlled way to get exercise. Here’s how they work:

  • Variable Speeds: Dog Power. It will only go as fast as your pup will go if he stops the machine stops.
  • Slatted Belt: The slatted surface provides good traction for your dog and reduces stress on their joints compared to traditional treadmills.
  • Safe & Secure: Slat mills typically have sidewalls to keep your dog contained and prevent them from falling off.

The dog is harnessed to the equipment so they cannot fall off. Dogs are encouraged to move forward using toys and positive motivation like clapping and cheering. There is no limit to how fast your dog can run, and many dogs will experience full-speed running that lasts for more than a few seconds for the first time.

  • How often should I run my dog?
Most clients will schedule a run two times a week, and usually at the same time. It will help your dog mentally and physically. As they learn the time when they will be working-out they will look forward to the workouts. Because you know what is best for your dog, it is best to observe how they react to regular exercise and book accordingly.
  • How should I prepare my dog for a run? We will text or call you when we are on our way to your location. Do not feed your dog one hour before they are going to work out and let them relieve themselves 15 minutes before your scheduled workout.
